John MacBain

John H McCall MacBain is the founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Trader Classified Media, one of the world's largest classified advertising companies. MacBain is also the current Chairman of the Board of European Climate Foundation, where he dedicates to implement and develop energy and climate policies that greatly reduce Europe's global carbon dioxide emissions.[1]

Biography

Macbain is a graduate in economics from McGill University, was a 1980 Rhodes Scholar in Law at Wadham College, Oxford,[2] and played for the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club where he served as the Captain during the 1981-1982 academic year. He subsequently received an MBA from Harvard Business School.[2] After his Harvard's study, MacBain founded Trader Classified Media, which currently operates over 575 print titles and 56 websites in 20 countries. The company focuses particularly on the automotive, real estate, jobs and general merchandise sectors. He is also founder of the McCall MacBain Foundation.[3] His father was Al MacBain, graduated Dalhousie Law School in 1951, and became a Canadian MP from Nova Scotia.

Philanthropy

MacBain has become one of the world's best-known philanthropic businessman around the world. In 2009, MacBain donated £1.75 million to Wadham College, Oxford.[4] In 2007, MacBain donated $5-million to McGill University, his alma mater, to create graduate fellowships in the Faculty of Arts.[5] In 2003, MacBain pledged to donate $1 billion to aid projects in sub-Saharan Africa.[6] In 2011, MacBain donated $3 million to Dalhousie University, which announced the establishment of the MacBain Chair in Health Law and Policy to honour MacBain's late father.[7]
